Oh the bargains you find on the side of the road // 08.21.02
Just when I thought that I'd seen all the shining examples of "country bumpkin" Wisconsin has to offer, I find I was wrong. On my all-time top 5 list of freak ass things I've seen, this one blazing example of bumpkinocity* takes first place by a wide margin. On my way to work, I saw a rummage sale... in a ditch. Yes folks, there was a rummage sale in a ditch on Sunday in Racine, WI. The road I take to work goes from commercial to farmland to commercial surroundings. Well, about a mile from the commercial part of Green Bay Road, there were several people who'd set up card tables in the ditch and put out their wares for passers-by to peruse. Oh and did they ever! There was a line of about 12 cars parked on the side of the road, everyone sifting through straightened Slinkies and the coveted Osh Kosh B'gosh coveralls. When I left work (I passed them just before 2pm and drove by again just before 7) they were still there. Guess they couldn't find anyone to pawn off Gramma's old velvet Elvis painting on. *You know, making up words is one of the symptoms of schizophrenia.
